What are the “fidget spinners” that suddenly everyone wants?
The ‘fidget spinner’ has been twenty years old and is now extremely popular. In the internet, more and more films are showing off with fun tricks that you can do with the toy, but what is it actually?
Fidget spinners are small gadgets that become your palm. In the middle there are ball bearings that hold you between your thumb and middle finger. To make the toy, you have to give one finger to one of the three protrusions. That sometimes also makes for a buzzing noise. You can also turn the “fidget spinner” by placing it horizontally on the table, push your ball bearing the ball bearings and then push one of the protrusions.
The fidget spinner was originally intended to help relax hyperactive, anxious or autistic children. According to some researchers, the fidget toy can help children and adults stayed focus, but disagreements exists among people.
Other experts see the gadget rather as a distraction and emphasize that there is no enough scientific evidence that helps children with ADHD or autism.
But what is amazing is that that Tony Lloyd, the founder of the ADHD Foundation, believes that the invention can help children with ADHD. In an interview to The Independent, he said that the fidget spinner satisfies their need for movement so that their brains continue to produce dopamine, which benefits their concentration and memory. However, some American schools have banned the “fidget spinner” partly because it makes too much noise. ADHD expert Lloyd understood that children without ADHD could be distracted by the spinner and its sound. Certainly if everyone in the class turns to his “fidget spinner”, the buzzing sound may be disturbing. It was the American Catherine Hettinger from Florida who invented the fidget spinner twenty years ago, as ideal occupational therapy for her daughter. She presented her invention to different toy manufacturers, but did not get it sold.
Among others at Hasbro, Hettinger got the lid on the nose, so she decided not to renew the expensive patent of 400 euros. And therefore, the inventor of the fidget spinner now misses a lot of revenue, because today it is extremely popular.A “fidget spinner” consists of different colors and can even give light. It is available through various online websites like bol.com and Amazon. The cheaper spinner you will find for around 8 euros 30.
