Sarcelles: the high school students make their spinning tops Hand Spinner

The students of the Machining Technician section created their model which they intend to sell in the lycée to finance part of a study trip to Toulouse.
The Lycée de la Tourelle, in Sarcelles, manufactures the famous Hand Spinner since this Friday. This kind of top, which invaded the playgrounds, was the subject of a pedagogical project with the students of the section Technician of machining. The latter have developed a model, which they have begun to produce for sale within the institution.
“This form is the students who created it,” says Jean Guillot, professor of mathematics. They drew it with design software that provided them with the lines of commands to be grasped in the machining machine to cut the part. It all starts with a square block of metal. “We first make a surfacing to remove a layer of 1 or 2 mm on each side,” says Philippe Vallat, professor of mechanical engineering, option productique.
After drilling three holes to hold the piece, students use another machine to cut the metal and give it that three-pointed shape. After a few finishes, the object is ready to receive the ball bearing and the brass supports that complement it.
The students carried out a price study based on the materials used and the parts to be purchased. They set the price at € 6, which is what it costs the establishment to produce each piece. They must make about a hundred. Their sale will then finance part of a study trip to Toulouse.
